Successful launch of Stitching & Unstitching the Troubles Exhibition

30 April 2013

The community launch of Stitching and Unstitching the Troubles was attended by community groups who participated in project workshops, producing new arpilleras (textile artworks) for display in this exhibition at Mid-Antrim Museum at The Braid. These groups included Buzzy Bees( Glenarm), Stitch and Bitch (Carnlough), Fab Femme (Ballymoney), Focus on Family (Coleraine), Glenmona Resource Centre (Cushendall). Maria Cagney from Mid-Antrim Museum Service welcomed the groups. Roberta Bacic, Curator of the exhibition then delivered a guided tour to those in attendance. Artist Irene MacWilliams whose work entitled ‘Common Loss’ is also displayed in this exhibition, explained how she dealt with the subject of The Troubles and loss of human life in her work.

This event was enjoyed by all whom attended. General reaction to the exhibition was very positive and the community groups expressed a keen interest in developing further textile artwork on the subject of conflict and memories of the Troubles. This exhibition is part of the North East PEACE III Cultural Fusions Project which is being delivered by Mid-Antrim Museums Service and Causeway Museum Service.
