On the Brink: Final Learning Resource

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, On the Brink: The Politics of Conflict Project explores the impact and legacy of the outbreak of the First World War, the Battle of the Somme and the Easter Rising in the Mid and East Antrim and Causeway areas.

An overarching On the Brink project objective is :

…to highlight how many of the histories from 1914 – 16, which are often understood in exclusive terms, are locally, nationally and internationally connected through histories of war and revolution.

The complexity and interconnectedness of these histories was explored through a three year touring exhibitions programme, associated workshops and, a volunteer tour guide strand which provided interpretative tours of local sites of remembrance.

Our museum collections and local built heritage play a vital role in enabling the interpretation of these histories. Research into newspapers, letters and diaries reveal local perspectives and individual voices from the time, highlighting the complexity and intensity of the international conflict.

These different and often divergent sources reveal how the historic strands of 1914-1916 intertwine, enabling communities to discover and more inclusively remember the dramatic events of those years.

On the Brink: The Politics of Conflict 1914-1916 has been supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to actively engage local communities in the North East of Ireland with a multi-perspective approach to exploring the contemporary impact of the outbreak of the First World War on the home front; the Easter Rising and Battle of the Somme within a national and international context; and their current legacies.
